History

Daylesford Stud has long been widely regarded as one of the most successful racing and breeding operations in Europe.

From an original group of three mares, the stud has flourished into a force on the global stage, its roll of honour headed by the Epsom and Irish Oaks heroine Sariska, Prix de Diane scorer Star Of Seville, the Group 1-placed colts Eagle Top, Wings Of Desire and King Of Comedy and the Bahrain Trophy winners Shantaram, Mr Singh and Feel Like Dancing.

In a testament to the management of various lines, some of the early Daylesford families remain an important element to the success of the stud today.

My Ballerina, a daughter of Sir Ivor who was the first mare to join the stud, left behind the high- class two-year-old Sundari, in turn the dam of Group 3 winner Mr Singh.

Of particular importance, however, was the acquisition of Maycocks Bay. Bought for 32,000gns as a yearling, the daughter of Muhtarram developed into a formidable stayer for Michael Bell, finishing in the frame in 11 of 17 starts with a win in the 2002 Listed Silver Cup at York as the highlight.

Maycocks Bay went on to exert an immense influence at stud as dam of the brilliant filly Sariska, whose victories in the Epsom and Irish Oaks still burn bright in the memory, and Park Hill Stakes heroine Gull Wing. Sariska has since gone on to enjoy a successful career at stud as has Gull Wing, who foaled the Epsom Oaks third The Lark alongside Eagle Top and Wings Of Desire, both of whom ran second in the King George.

Daylesford tasted Classic success again in 2015 courtesy of another homebred Star Of Seville, who made all to take the Prix de Diane under Frankie Dettori.

That daughter of Duke Of Marmalade was bred by the stud out of Stage Presence, a daughter of Selkirk who also provided the stud with top-class miler King Of Comedy, the narrow St James’s Palace Stakes runner-up of 2019.

Another inspired purchase, All’s Forgotten, foaled the high-class staying colts Shantaram and Forever Now as well as an excellent filly in To Eternity, who won the 2016 Listed Chalice Stakes at Newmarket by six lengths. Like Maycocks Bay, the influence of All’s Forgotten continues to run deep within Daylesford.

More recently, the Daylesford team have enjoyed great success purchasing at the breeze-ups. Multiple Group winner Tropbeau, second in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, is one such success story as is the Prix Chloe heroine Suphala, a regally-related daughter of Frankel, and Listed scorers Pamplemousse and Queen Of Love. Each are exciting broodmares of the future for Daylesford.

Meanwhile, an investment into the wonderful Magnificient Style family developed by Lady Rothschild has already reaped rewards in the achievements of Thunder Drum, a rapidly progressive filly for Jerome Reynier who last year struck in the Group 3 Prix du Royaumont. Passion, knowledge and hard work are the key elements behind what Daylesford Stud is today. With a number of stakes winners having come off the land since it was established in 2000 while in a further testament to its success, several of the colts, among them King Of Comedy, Eagle Top, Wings Of Desire and Shantaram, stand at stud across the globe.
