Hope springs eternal, and with horses, the promise of such is never far away.

At Daylesford Stud, the ethos remains breeding to race, to produce the best horses and cultivate successful families. As such, the need to conform to sale ring fashion is not a priority. In its place is the idea of producing tough, sound stock, and with the hope that among the different generations lies a star to take the Daylesford name to elite heights.

If results were built on passion and knowledge, then Daylesford would have few peers.

A keen rider, horses have been a major part of Carole Bamford’s life since childhood, and her aptitude for equestrianism has been inherited enthusiastically by her children, including daughter Alice, who competed to an international level.

“ I’d hate it if you had a lot of horses, so that you didn’t know who they were: it doesn’t make any sense to me.

“Walking the dogs every morning, I love to see them grow, develop and change – there might be ones you think are going to be something, and others you think won’t, and six months later everything has changed round.”

Lady Bamford

Carole Bamford is regarded as a visionary in organic farming and that ideology of working respectfully with the land naturally lends itself to the rearing of horses. The Daylesford Estate, with its gentle atmosphere and rolling chalk hills, is an ideal spot and thus in 2000, a long-held ambition to breed racehorses manifested itself in the establishment of Daylesford Stud.

One of the first mares, the Sir Ivor mare My Ballerina, produced Sundari, who ran third in the Cherry Hinton Stakes.

Then came yearling purchase Maycocks Bay, who helped propel the stud to Classic heights as the dam of Sariska. And therein lies a snapshot of what drives Daylesford; the cultivation and success of any family in racehorse breeding requires patience, knowledge and a little bit of luck, and in the case of Maycocks Bay, the team at Daylesford took the time to understand and develop her family - and to great effect.

Similarly, the influence of other mares such as All’s Forgotten and Stage Presence pay tribute to an approach where corners are never cut.

The stud is run by a select team headed by stud manager Chris Lock. Carole Bamford, however, is very hands on; she rarely misses a foaling and will spend much of her time walking the fields, watching the mares and evaluating their foals.

“I love them being at home,” Carole Bamford told Chris McGrath in an interview with Thoroughbred Owner Breeder magazine. “They’re nearly all foaled here, so I’ll get a telephone call at 1am and I’m straight down in my nightie. I’d hate it if you had a lot of horses, so that you didn’t know who they were: it doesn’t make any sense to me.

“Walking the dogs every morning, I love to see them grow, develop and change – there might be ones you think are going to be something, and others you think won’t, and six months later everything has changed round.”

The Daylesford brand is today a byword for organic and responsible living, its thinking well advertised by the popularity of its estate farm shop and the receipt of over 120 awards. Similarly in the world of horseracing, it has reaped the benefits of an owner who is not only passionate about the sport but also her stock. It is a passion shared by Carole Bamford’s daughter Alice, and with that, Daylesford is on a path to excel for many years to come.
